Player spotlight
Russell is a leader through action rather than volume. His influence comes from demanding the ball, trusting his instincts and accepting responsibility when a match needs imagination or courage. He can inspire a team through a single moment of skill that changes its belief and the direction of a game. His Scotland captaincy record was mixed, with two wins from five Tests in 2024, but the armband has never defined his leadership; he leads most naturally through what he creates on the field.

Howden British & Irish Lions Player of the Series — 2025
Defining Performances
Scotland 25–13 England · Murrayfield Stadium
Under intense personal scrutiny after an uneven start to the tournament, Russell delivered a world-class attacking performance. His perfectly measured 40-metre cut-out pass over the English defence created the decisive try and became one of Scotland's defining moments of the decade.
South Africa 19–16 British & Irish Lions · Cape Town Stadium
Returning from an Achilles injury, Russell replaced Dan Biggar after only 11 minutes and transformed a struggling Lions attack. His flat passing, vision and varied kicking repeatedly challenged the Springbok blitz defence, while he contributed 11 points from the tee in the deciding Test.
Bath 23–21 Leicester Tigers · Twickenham Stadium
Russell scored 13 points with a perfect return from the tee and created the final's defining moment. Reading Handré Pollard's pass inside Bath territory, he intercepted the ball and released Max Ojomoh to finish the decisive try.

2025

2025
British & Irish Lions · Won the Test series in Australia
Started all three Tests, scored 15 points and received the Howden Player of the Series award as the Lions secured their first series victory since 2013.
Career Assessment
Russell belongs among the greatest attacking fly-halves of the professional era. His career has combined rare imagination with longevity, leadership and, ultimately, major silverware. The 2025 treble with Bath and his starring role in a victorious Lions series removed the final argument used against him: that his spectacular talent could entertain but not consistently win. At his best, very few players in rugby history have possessed a greater ability to see, create and execute opportunities that appear impossible to everybody else.

Player Profile
Finn Russell is a Scottish international fly-half and three-time British & Irish Lion whose creativity has made him one of rugby's most distinctive modern players. After emerging with Glasgow Warriors and helping them win the 2015 Pro12, he became a leading figure for Racing 92 before joining Bath in 2023. Russell has been central to one of Scotland's strongest professional-era teams and has helped defeat every Tier One nation except South Africa and New Zealand, while coming agonisingly close to a historic first victory over the All Blacks. Long celebrated for his flair but questioned over whether his style could deliver the sport's biggest trophies, he answered those doubts emphatically by helping Bath complete a historic treble in 2025 before starting every Test of the British & Irish Lions' victorious tour of Australia.
